Instead of getting a fast start from his low draw, he was slowly away, but still got a dream run near the inside and won going away. This rig clearly takes his racing well and has now won three times at this his favourite track. He has been raised to a mark of 48 which still lets him into 46-50 banded races which is the plan for next Monday, although he could be out on Friday under a 7lb penalty which his rider can claim. He also has an entry back at Southwell next Tuesday. Prime Recreation, another veteran who won off a two-stone higher mark in his heyday, did well to overcome an unfavourable draw and fought back up the straight when headed, only to be nailed by the winner in the last strides. Feminist also went with the strong pace but still clung on to third, although the reapplication of cheekpieces did not look to make any difference. Nothing else threatened to land a blow. |

BAHAMIAN BAY, winner of a similar race over the course 12 months ago, was having her first run since October, but she was plenty fit enough and, having shown good pace, stepped up a gear to win decisively. She may be capable of winning a little race on turf. Boanerges, who had run well enough 24 hours earlier at Wolverhampton, was outpaced early on but, rousted along, he kept on well in the closing stages. Percy Douglas showed good pace and ran right to the line. He is in good heart. Mr Spliffy, with the blinkers back on, travelled well but then seemed to hang fire a bit before staying on. This was his best run for a while. The last of Laurel Dawn's seven wins came in June 2004, and he has not put in many decent efforts since, but he did show a bit more here, staying on under pressure without being able to get in a serious blow. Mystery Pips came out of the stalls awkwardly and that may have affected her, as she never really looked as if she was going to take a hand. She is better than this form. |
