ANALYSIS: This looked well up to standard for a Listed race and went to the recent Group 3 winner HAZYVIEW, who overcame a 5lb penalty under an astute ride.
Although well beaten in a Group 1 at York since his Epsom win, Hazyview had a good chance if he got to the front but both the better drawn Lateen Sails, and possibly Shot To Fame, stood in his way, as they too like to be at the head of affairs. While Lateen Sails broke fast and got the rail, Spencer was determined to lead on Hazyview, and once he got there he slowed things down and dictated his own pace. Though strongly pressed up the straight, Hazyview was always in command, and he won decisively in the end. He takes his races well and connections will look for a Group 2 now.
Welcome Stranger was stepping up in class after running creditably from a poor draw in the Hunt Cup, and he excelled himself in second, as he was worst in at the weights. He never looked like getting to grips with the winner, but stuck on gamely under pressure. Connections are now eyeing the new Group 3 on the Polytrack at Lingfield next month. He was a maiden winner on the surface in his younger days.
Kamakiri did the better of the two three-year-olds that ran and Richard Hannon was pleased with him, though he felt he had not quite got home.
Lateen Sails, disappointing last season, had shaped better on his reappearance, but he was unable to get things his own way this time and looked rather unenthusiastic, carrying his head awkwardly.
Cape Greko, off the track nearly a year, was dropped out at the start and switched off rather too well, getting detached. He was far from disgraced in the end and is sure to come on for this.
Shot To Fame, second to Gateman in the corresponding race last year, was unable to dominate and dropped right out.
