Unlike other races nothing elected to come down the middle. The stands' side group led overall for three-quarters of the race but probably went too fast in the conditions as those who helped force it finished well behind, spent forces well before the uphill final furlong as five of the first six home, all racing on the far side at a more even pace thanks to the efforts of My Paris, were able to finish their races. BLUE MONDAY made a big impression and this lightly raced and consistent four-year-old can go on to better things next year. The same connections won this race ten years ago with Cap Juluca, who was a three-year-old who went on to win at Listed level the following year to prove slightly better than a handicapper. It would be no surprise if this gelding did the same as he not only quickened up to mow down My Paris and Desert Destiny into the final furlong but then stretched again in the final 50 yards after Evaluator produced what had looked a dangerous charge. While beaten in a more tactical race on softer ground at Chester earlier in the season, Blue Monday actually looked to improve on recent faster ground form with the cut. Evaluator is another who likes cut in the ground and he reproduced his Goodwood winning effort here to finish a clearcut second. The worry about another rise here into the three-figure rating will make life hard but connections did well with a similar sort in Norton, although this is a hold-up performer. My Paris has already reached that level and has run a blinder lugging his big weight from the front on this step up in trip having contested other top seven furlong and mile handicaps this year. He is a big imposing gelding and while he was passed by the two principals, he maintained his clear advantage over the pack on his side to suggest he was far from weakening and this could open up new opportunities which will be needed for a gelding who has limited opportunities. The front running role clearly suits as does this cut in the ground. Crosspeace is a similar sort but being a year younger there could be more improvement to come. He raced prominently and after being tapped for toe as his group picked up the pace to pass the stands' side group, he rallied meeting the rising ground in the final furlong. He had been caught over ten furlongs albeit in a Group 3 abroad in August but with another year on his back that trip looks sure to suit but he will have to be up to that level to be competitive. Ace Of Hearts was niggled along from an early stage but still led home the stands' side group as others weakened. The handicapper looks to have his measure but it was still a brave effort. Desert Destiny was clear in the group of five against the inside rail into the final two furlongs but found the ninth furlong too testing on ground going against him. In the circumstances, it was a solid effort. Blythe Knight ran a sound enough race being on the wrong side, staying on steadily but remains winless for 18 months. Impeller ran well enough considering the ground had turned against him but is another who needs to come down a few pounds in the handicap. The other two who ran a shade better than the bare form but remain hard to place from their high ratings are Colisay and Counsel's Opinion, who did some strong running when the race was over. The latter was slowly away and switched off travelling well at the back before staying on nicely as did Colisay when switched out to see daylight into the final two furlongs. Brindisi deserves a mention as she travelled notably well and looked like winning the stands side race inside the final two furlongs but then tied up on the softened ground, again not quite looking to get the extra furlong. |
