ANALYSIS: Jockeys described the ground as "beautiful", "slow", "tiring" and "dead"; somewhere in between would probably be correct, with the runners in this handicap breaking the minute.

MECCA'S MATE, at her best when she gets her toe in slightly, was always travelling like a winner. Asserting her superiority in a matter of strides, she wasn't doing a lot in front, and had to be kept up to her job, but she was never going to be caught. She is a much-improved filly, and, on this evidence, hasn't finished winning yet.

Whistler, who came from a long way back, ran a sound race in second, but is a difficult horse to catch right.

Fictional ran another good race in defeat and should find a winning opportunity shortly, while Henry Hall continues to run well, but is proving hard to win with.

Handsome Cross made a bold bid, but, raised 6lb for his latest win, he was anchored late on. Salviati lost his chance at the start, and Seven No Trumps disappointed for no apparent reason.
